Cost of hiring

What a bad sales hire really costs your business

When a sales hire doesn't work out, most business owners count the salary they paid and move on. The salary is the smallest line on the bill.

The visible cost

Base salary, superannuation, a car or allowance, tools, a phone and any commission paid on deals that later churned. For a mid-level Australian sales role, six months of employment is rarely under $60,000 all-in — and that is the part you can see on a payroll report.

The pipeline that never existed

A territory carried by an underperformer is a territory not being worked. Every month without prospecting is a month missing from your pipeline three to six months later. That gap does not close when the replacement starts; it compounds, because the new person begins from zero rather than inheriting live opportunities.

The accounts that got damaged

The most expensive failures are not the reps who do nothing — they are the ones who do the wrong thing in front of your best customers. Discounting to win, over-promising on lead times or simply going quiet on a key account can cost more in lifetime value than the entire recruitment exercise.

The management time

Underperformance absorbs an owner or sales manager's attention far out of proportion to the role: extra coaching, pipeline reviews, performance conversations and eventually an exit process. That is time not spent with customers or with the people who are performing.

The cost to the team

Strong salespeople notice who is carrying the number and who isn't. Tolerating a poor hire for too long quietly tells your best people that standards are negotiable — and they are the ones with options.

Then you pay to hire again

Advertising, screening, interviewing, onboarding, ramp time. Realistically, replacing a failed sales hire means another three to six months before the seat produces revenue.

How to reduce the risk

Be specific about what success looks like in the first 90 days before you write the ad. Verify quota history rather than accepting it. Test the hardest part of the job during the process. Keep the process short so you don't lose the strongest candidates. And make sure whoever recruits for you carries some of the risk — we back every placement with a free replacement guarantee if a candidate doesn't last three months.
